What causes syphilis?
Treponema pallidum, a spirochete.
How is syphilis transmitted?
Via sex with an infected person.
Why is Treponema pallidum challenging to culture?
It is fragile, does not live in culture, and dies quickly with drying or heat.
What are the diagnostic methods for syphilis?
Physical examination, blood test for serology, and swab test of fluid from sores for microscopy.
What are the symptoms of primary syphilis?
Characterized by an ulcer called a chancre.
What are the symptoms of secondary syphilis?
Fever
myalgia
lymphadenopathy
patchy alopecia
symmetrical rash on palms and soles
painless shallow infectious ulcers
What happens during latent syphilis?
It is asymptomatic and can last for many years.
What are the complications of tertiary syphilis?
Can include cardiovascular, CNS, bone, joint, or skin involvement.
What complications can syphilis cause during pregnancy?
Miscarriage
stillbirth
congenital syphilis in newborns.
What are the symptoms of congenital syphilis?
A very serious infection in newborns with severe health complications.
