It is fastidious and cannot survive drying or heat.
How is gonorrhea transmitted?
Only by person-to-person contact
What samples are used for diagnosing gonorrhea?
Urethral, cervical, rectal, and pharyngeal swabs
How should gonorrhea samples be handled for culture?
Plated immediately onto warm selective media for up to 2 weeks
Why is microscopy important in diagnosing gonorrhea?
Rapid identification is almost certain if gram-negative diplococci are observed
Are home kits available for diagnosing gonorrhea?
Yes, but accuracy can vary
What are the symptoms of gonorrhea in women?
Unusual vaginal discharge
pain or burning during urination
lower abdominal pain
bleeding between periods or after sex
What are the symptoms of gonorrhea in men?
Unusual discharge from the penis, pain or burning during urination, foreskin inflammation, testicular pain
What complications can gonorrhea cause in women?
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, ectopic pregnancy, infertility, miscarriage, premature labor, neonatal conjunctivitis
What complications can gonorrhea cause in men?
Painful infection in the testicles and prostate gland, infertility
What rare complication can gonorrhea cause?
It can spread to the bloodstream and lead to sepsis
