synthetic fibres Flashcards
monomers
each small unit is a chemical substance called monomers
polymers
when monomers join together to form large units is called polymers
types of synthetic fibres
- rayon
- nylon
- polyester
- acrylic fibre
rayon
it is made up from wood pulp. resembles silk and is also called artificial silk. uses- textile industry, bed sheets, aprons, carpets etc
nylon
it is a polyamide fibre, uses fishing nets, climbing ropes, shirts, socks. it is strong, lightweight, lustrous, extremely fine, wrinkle free does not absorb water.
characterstics of synthetic fibres
Synthetic fibres are cheaper than natural fibre.
Synthetic fibres are stronger than natural fibre.
Synthetic fibres are more durable than natural fibre.
Synthetic fabrics are dried up in less time.
polyester
made up of repeating units of a chemical called ester. dress, curtains, suits, shirts etc
acrylic fibres
lightweight, soft and warm. jackets, blankets, shawls etc
themoplastic
gets easily deformed and can be moulded again and again. ex- polythene
thermo setting plastics
do not become soft on heating, once moulded cant be moulded again. ex- bakelite, melamine
plastics and enviroment
plastics are non- biodegradable. they cause air, water, soil pollution and it also cause animal deaths
