sound Flashcards
ear is divided into how many parts? name them.
outer ear, middle ear, inner ear
outer ear
it consists of a cartilaginous structure called pinna. IT CONNECTS SOUND WAVES. the pinna is further connected to ear canal, at the end of which eardrum is present.
middle ear
it consists of a chain of 3 bones- (hammer, anvil, stirrup). hammer is connected to eardrum and stirrup (innermost) is connected to inner ear. middle ear is connected to throat thru eustachian tube.
hammer, anvil and stirrup are collectively called
ossicles
inner ear
contains cochlea and semi-circular canals. the receptors in semicircular canals send impulses through sensory neurons to the auditory nerve which connects inner ear to the brain.
our ears dont respond to sounds having frequency less than?
20 Hz
every moving or vibrating object produces sound. true of false, and if so then why cant we hear our hand moving?
true every moving object produces a sound. our human ears dont respond to sound any less than 20Hz

true every moving object produces a sound. our human ears dont respond to sound any less than 20Hz or more than 20,000Hz
what is called audible sound?
the sound whose frequency lies between 20Hz to 20,000Hz which we are able to hear is called audible sound.
infrasonic sounds
the sounds having less frequency than 20 hz
ultrasonic sounds
the sound having frequency more than 20,000 hz
what are the characteristics of sound
- pitch
- loudness
- quality
pitch
you can distinguish a shrill and a grave sound even with same loudness
loudness
it distinguish loud and faint sound even when they have the same pitch. loudness = amplitute2
the loudness of a sound is measured in a unit called decibel.
quality
it enables us to distinguish between two sounds even if they have same pitch and loudness. like you know your family member voice and guitar etc
