force and pressure Flashcards
what are contact forces?
forces which act only when objects are in physical contact with each other and bring about changes
types of contact force
- muscular force
- mechanical force
- frictional force
what is mechanical force?
the force exerted by a machine to do some work
muscular force
the force exerted due to the action of the muscles is known as muscular force
frictional force
the force acting along the 2 surfaces in contact which opposes the motion of one object over the other
what is not-contact force
force which can act even when objects are not in physical contact which each other and bring about changes.
types of non contact force
- magnetic force
- electrostatic force
- gravitational force
electrostatic force
the force exerted by a charged body to another charged or uncharged body is called electrostatic force
gravitational force
the force with which two objects attract each other is called gravitational force
pressure
the physical quantity to measure force per unit area is called pressure
what are the two factors that pressure depends on?
- the greater the force the greater its effect
2. the smaller the area of contact the greater its effect
formula to find pressure.
P= F/A
what is lateral pressure
sideways pressure exerted by liquid on the walls of the containers is called lateral pressure
atmospheric pressure
the pressure exerted by the air due to its own weight
