combustion and flame Flashcards
combustion
a chemical process in which a substance burns in oxygen to give of heat and light is called combustion.
rapid combustion
burns at a rapid rate, producing a very large amount of heat and light in a short period of time. ex) burning of wax
spontaneous combustion
when a substance burns on its own without any external heat. ex) forest fires
explosive combustion
occurs suddenly with large amounts of gas, heat and light with sound. ex) fire crakers
flame
a region of burning gas is called flame
innermost region of flame
this zone lacks oxygen so there is little to no combustion there. it appears black and is the least hot region of a flame
middle zone
lacks oxygen so it produces carbon particles and carbon monoxide. the unburnt carbon becomes very hot. this is what makes the flame luminous and is the major part
outer zone
hotest zone of a flame. it is oxygen rich so it burns at the highest temprature
