reproduction in animals Flashcards
reproduction
the production of new individuals by their parents is known as reproduction
sexual reproduction and some examples
the production of a new animal by the existing two parents, by the fusion of their gametes is called sexual reproduction. ex: cows, dogs, humans, horses, cats etc
how does a new individual through sexual reproduction is formed?
when male and female gametes fuse which forms a zygote that develops into a new individual.
asexual reproduction and examples
the production of new animals by a single parent without the involvement of gametes. ex) amoeba, hydra, yeast etc
since there is no fusion of gametes in asexual reproduction how does the individual form?
no fusion of gametes means no zygote which leads the young once to be exact copy of the parent
what are the male and female gametes
male- sperm
female- ovum or egg
gametogenesis
the process of production of gametes
fertilisation
the fusion of a male with female gamete to form a zygote
what is the first cell of a new organism?
zygote. zygote is a fertilised egg
external fertilisation
when the fertilisation occurs outside of the female body. ex) fishes and frogs
internal fertilisation
the fertilisation which occurs inside a female body. ex) mammals, birds etc
viviparous animals
animals which give birth to young once, ex) human, dogs
oviparous animals
animals which lay eggs. ex) hen, bird, frog etc
true or false
amphibians and fishes external fertilisation takes place
true
mammals take internal
yes
