Synovial Joint Flashcards
1
Q
What is the structure and function of a ligament
A
- a tough band of slightly elastic connective tissue
- connects bone to bone and stabilises the joint during movement
2
Q
What is the structure and function of the synovial fluid
A
- lubricating liquid contained within the joint cavity
- reduces friction and nourishes articulated cartilage
3
Q
What is the structure and function of articulate cartilage
A
- smooth tissue which covers the surface of articulating bones
- absorbs shock and allows friction free movement
4
Q
What is the structure and function of the joint capsule
A
- a fibrous sac with an inner synovial membrane
- enclosed and strengthens the joint secreting synovial fluid
5
Q
What is the structure and function of a bursa
A
- a closed fluid filled sac found where tendons rub over bones
- reduces friction between tendons and bones
6
Q
How does skeletal muscle contract
A
- nerve impulse initiated at the motor neurone cell body
- nerve impulse conducted down the axon of the motor neurone by a nerve action potential to the synaptic cleft
- neurotransmitter is secreted into the synaptic cleft to conduct the nerve impulse across the gap
- if the electrical charge is above threshold the muscle fibre will contract
- this happens in all or none law
