how did the availability of time affect sport
A
- technological advancements leads to better working hours this allows for higher participation rates
- 2 weeks payed holiday allows for rest and leisure time to play sports

A
- 2 world wars negatively affected participation
- the beginning of drug scandals in the 60s gave sport a bad reputation
- hooliganism was now an issue in football
- fields of play were enclosed and sports had written codes of conduct

A
- professionalism becoming less associated with the working class as there were now professional rugby and cricket clubs
- unemployment during the interwar depression caused some professional clubs to go bankrupt due to lack of spectators
- middle class didn’t associate with professional sport
- amateur sport was good for moral in the war

how did the gender role change and what was the effect on sport
A
- men at war -> women had to keep the business running, meaning they didn’t have time to participate due to lack of time and money
- this also meant that women could not travel to stadiums to watch games and therefore clubs lost their revenue and popularity

- public and private transport became more accessible
- increasing numbers travelling to play
- spectatorship increased massively
- big crowds at London Olympics in 1948
- international competitions available by planes and ferries (introduction of globalisation)

A
- education act of 1944 meant all schools had the responsibility to develop physical, mental, spiritual well being of the community
- all schools including grammar schools had PE on their curriculum
- and extra curricular provisions were introduced
