Muscle fibre type, roles of muscles Flashcards

1
Q

What are slow oxidative fibres

A
  • they are recruited to provide energy for submaximal aerobic work
  • they contract intermittently to give overall low force of contraction
  • individual fibres will recover very quickly
    -1:1 or 1:0.5
  • ## can train every day and low intensity doesn’t cause fibre damage

Q

What are fast oxidative glycolytic fibres

A
  • produce large amount of force quickly
  • also have capacity to resist fatigue
  • middle distance races eg 800m

Q

What are fast glycolytic fibres

A
  • these are recruited in the last 2-10 seconds of contraction
  • these will be accompanied by eccentric muscle fibre damage
  • 4-10 days to recover

Q

what is the antagonistic muscle action

A
  • muscles never work alone, they work in pairs to produce a coordinated movement. as the agonist shortens to create movement the antagonist lengthens to coordinate the action
