Describe how the Olympic Games were set up

A
  • the first olympics was held in Greece from the 8th Century BC to the 4th century AD
  • modern Olympic Games were established in 1896 by French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin
  • he developed the Olympics to bring countries together to create healthy competition
  • the international Olympic committee was founded by the Paris congress they own the rights to the symbol and the games

What was the aim of the Olympic Games

A
  • to promote the development of the physical and moral qualities
  • spread the Olympic principles around the world, creating international good will
  • bring athletes from other countries together
  • to educate young people through sport in a spirit of better understanding than each other
  • Olympic motto: Faster, Higher, Stronger
  • play for the love not to Win
  • Core values: encourage effort, demonstrate respect, develop harmony

What is the British Olympic association

A
  • formed in 1905
  • it’s responsible for Great Britain’s Olympic teams participation in summer and winter games
  • it supplies support for athletes before and during the games
  • it selects the team

What was the third reich ideology

  • this was the Olympic Games in Berlin 1936
  • Hitler and the Nazis exploited the Olympic Games as propaganda to allow them to make it seem Germany was a superior empire
  • they used it to promote the model image of blonde hair and blue eyes
  • German star Lutz Lang was tipped to dominate the games however African American Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals and Hitler refused to give him his medals

What was the black power in Mexico 1968 Games

  • 2000 Mexicans were killed by Mexican military at a demonstration against the use of public funds for the games
  • at the time black Americans lacked equality of opportunity, forced to be segregated in many aspects of society
  • Tommie smith and John Carlos created the black power salute to shine some media light upon the black equality
