Swine Nutrition Flashcards
Energy
carbohydrates and fats
fats
more expensive than carbs because they are more energy dense
–> ex: soybean oil, poultry fat, beef tallow, etc.
carbohydrates
balance cost of gain and feed efficiency
–> yellow corn is the greatest contributor of the pig diet
Protein and Animo Acids
-most common protein comes in soy protein meal in the US, also meat and bone meal
-balance of AA is KEY: have to have the right amino acids in order for the pig to grow
lysine
first limiting amino acid, must be provided for the pig to grow
Minerals
structural function in bone. needed for maintenance, growth, reproduction and lactation
ex: calcium, chloride, iron, copper, etc.
Vitamins
very small amounts
Particle Size
650-750 microns
What happens if the particle size is too small?
feed bridging (get stuck in the feeder system), dust, and/or gastric ulcer
