Poultry Waste and Cleanup Flashcards
How long are broilers are kept in the house?
6-8 weeks
What consistency should the litter be?
litter should be dry, but not too dry
What happens if the litter is wet and dirty?
it can cause harm to the chickens, especially their chest because of the ammonia and hydrogen sulfide
define cake
this is the top layer of litter and needs to be changed out between flocks
how long between flocks?
2-3 weeks
What is PLT?
Poultry Litter Treatment, helps with ammonia
poultry waste as fertilizer
houses are completely cleaned out once per year, the manure can be used to fertilize the soil
chlorination of waterlines
it varies (city water is more chlorinated than well water), chlorine is a good way to clean the waterlines but it can also harm them and kill vaccines
define CFU
Colony Forming Unit, measure the pathogen content in the waterlines
what is the impact of nitrogen on the waterlines?
nitrate can turn to nitrite which is bad for the birds because if effects hemoglobin and become toxic
hardness and mineral content in the waterline
It does not affect taste, but it will effect texture (may cause the birds to not want to drink the water)
define turbidity
the clarity of the water, we want it clear
what should the temperature of the water be?
50-55 degrees F
what ph should the water be?
birds are not sensitive to ph, 7 is ideal but they can handle about 4-7 on the ph scale
