Equine Reproduction Flashcards
parts of the mares reproductive tract
vulva, vestibule, vagina, cervix, bicornuate uterus – uterine horns, oviduct, ovary
vestibule
between vaginal opening and urethral opening, combines reproduction and urinary functions
bicornuate uterus
a uterus with two horns
what type of folds are in the cervix?
longitudinal folds
cervix
final barrier of protection, changes with the cycle (relax when cycling, really tight when in anestrus)
ovulation fossa
where follicle ovulates from, different from humans, in a place where it will ideally only ovulate one follicle
estrous length
21 days
estrus
development of follicle, estrogen dominant hormone
diestrus
luteal phase, progesterone dominant hormone
stallion’s reproductive tract
testes, epididymis, vas deferens, accessory glands, penis
the testis
function: produce spermatozoa and produce testosterone
Sertoli cells
produce spermatozoa and put them into the lumen
–> follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
-in the seminiferous tubules
leydig cells
luteinzing hormone
where is sperm stored?
epididymis
ultrasound
ultrasound waves go into the body and bounce back images. black=fluid, white=solid object
uterine edema
swelling in the uterus, ample amounts of estrogen, large follicles
equine breeding season
seasonal, long day breeders
–> about February to June
when are all horses birthdays?
January 1st
gestation length
340 days
MRP
maternal recognition of pregnancy, not sure how it works in horses
what is embryo mobility?
the embryo is moved by the uterus to each horn, eventually it will get stuck in a horn
equine embryo capsule
protects the embryo
twins in horses chance of survival?
less than 1%
pinching
massage one of the embryos to the top of the uterine horn and pop with the ultrasound probe
3 stages of parturition
- general discomfort (6 hours)
- water breaks and birth of foal (15-20 minutes)
- expulsion of placenta (1-3 hours)
what length of time is considered an emergency after a horses water breaks?
30 minutes
what to do if the placenta is retained?
try to flush out or the body can go into shock
1,2,3 foal guideline
hour 1: stand up
hour 2: nurse
hour 3: defecate (meconium)
meconium
the first defecation from a baby
