mycoplasmosis
infects the air sacs and sinuses will swell
botulism
a toxin from a bacteria
- the bacteria will thrive in a high temp, high humidity environment with organic materials (dead animals)
- causes paralysis
newcastle disease
the US does not have the most severe strain of this viral infection
- it can be transmitted by contaminated equipment etc.
- has respiratory symptoms that then affect the nervous system
infectious bronchitis
makes eggs with soft shells and irregular shape
- chickens only
- no treatment
mareks disease
concentrates in feather follicle creating dander
- disease of young chickens
gumboro (infectious bursal disease)
highly contagious in young chickens
- bursa - immune response –> decrease in immune development
- symptoms: ruffled feathers, tremors, strained defecation
avian influenza
highly contagious, carried by water fowl
- zoonotic disease
- have to depopulate the entire farm
coccidiosis
necrotic enteritis (intestines die)
- bloody diarrhea
internal parasites
ascarids, cecal worms, tapeworms, gapeworms
external parasites
mites, lice, fowl tick, chiggers
woody breast disease
inflammation of small veins
- affects meat, makes it tough
white striping
due to fast growth
- added fat to the meat affecting texture
sudden death syndrome
metabolic
- 1-4 weeks of age
- don’t really know why
duck viral hepatitis
highly contagious, young ducks
- get contractions of the legs and die within an hour
