Biosecurity in the Swine Industry Flashcards
Goal of Biosecurity
keep put pathogens the pigs have not been exposed to and minimize impact of endemic pathogen
Location
swine farms are as far apart as possible
–> minimum of 1.5 miles
People
people will never be the source for the problem
–> precautions: a main office, no contact with other pigs for 24 hours, small amount of visitors (sign in), shower-in/shower-out, working from highest health status pigs to lowest OR having one person work each section
Pig Flow
ALL-IN/ALL-OUT
pigs DO NOT mix.
–> they are housed separately and moved separately
cleaning the facility
ALL-IN/ALL-OUT
-move pigs
-remove all feed
-power wash
-disinfect
-DRY
Sick Pigs
-isolate sick pigs
-contact vet
-necropsy
Mortality
state regulates animal disposal
–> take care of dead stock daily
(rendering, landfill, incineration, compost)
MO dead animal law
properly dispose of dead animals within 24 hours of death
New Animals
-new breeding animals from single source
(knowledge of health status from previous system)
-semen for AI (decrease exposure)
new animals – isolation facilities
500 yards away from main herd
–minimum (30 day isolation, 30 day acclimation)
new animals – check for disease
-blood test
-daily observation
-evaluate results with vet
new animals – acclimation
-expose new animal to pathogens of main herd (manure or culled animals)
-current disease profile (compatibility with main herd, vaccinations)
S.P.F.
specific pathogen free
–> high health production facilities where pigs have not been exposed to anything
Facilities
-animal proof (birds, rodents, etc)
-regular cleaning
-maintenance (new tools or disinfect)
-footbaths
load out
located at the perimeter, outside vehicles cannot enter the farm,
–> ideal: mile or greater from production unit
