Q

How do you measure the amount of suspended solids in water?

A

Weigh a piece of dry filter paper.
Filter a known volume of water through it.
Dry the filter paper and reweigh.
The difference in weight is the suspended solids.
Multiply this by 1000/volume.
Multiply by 1000 to change to milligrams.

Q

How do you measure the amount of dissolved solids in water?

A

Weigh a clean dry beaker.
Add a known volume of water.
Evaporate the water and reweigh the beaker.
The difference in weight is dissolved solids.
Multiply this by 1000/volume.
Multiply by 1000 to change to milligrams.
