Clove Oil Experiment Flashcards
What are the uses for clove oil?
Flavouring- clove rock.
Pain killer.
Why is steam distillation used?
As some components have high boiling points and high temperatures are needed to distill.
These could cause damage to other components.
Why are buds used?
Because oil content is highest at this stage.
Why is there a safety opening?
To prevent explosion.
What is one precaution of using the safety tube.
Make sure the safety tube of the steam generator is below the water surface.
What do you do after 30 minutes.
Disconnect the steam generator to prevent suck back.
What is the product act the end of distillation?
A pale milky emulsion.
How do you separate eugenol?
Shake the emulsion with cyclohexane in a separating funnel with venting (loosening lid) to allow vapour to escape.
Eugenol dissolves in cyclohexane.
Allow the mixture to form layers- water will be at the bottom.
Remove the water then the cyclohexane and eugenol.
Evaporate the cyclohexane in a fume hood- liquid-liquid extraction.
Eugenol is left- caution- it is corrosive so wear rubber gloves.
Why is a loosening lid needed.
For venting to allow vapour to escape.
What is the purpose of cyclohexane?
For eugenol to dissolve in it.
How do you separate the eugenol from the cyclohexane.
Liquid- liquid extraction- evaporate cyclohexane in a fume hood.
What type of compound is eugenol?
An aromatic compound.
Why is eugenol an aromatic compound?
Because it contains a benzene ring.
Draw the structure of eugenol.
In manual.
What natural product did you extract in the school laboratory using steam distillation?
Clove oil/ eugenol.
