Combustion of Alkanes(Complete) Flashcards
1
Q
What is combustion?
A
An exothermic reaction producing oxygen.
2
Q
What does complete combustion always produce?
A
Water and carbon dioxide.
3
Q
Describe the relationship between the flame and chain length?
A
The longer the carbon chain, the yellower and more smoky the flame is.
4
Q
Write notes on CO.
A
CO - carbon monoxide.
It is a cumulative poison- it builds up over time.
It is colourless and odourless.
It is a neutral oxide and does not have any effect on litmus or universal indicator.
5
Q
Write the combustion equation for the following:
CH4
C2H6
A
CH4 + 2O2 = CO2 + 2H2O
C2H6 + 3.5O2 = 2CO2 + 3H2O
