What are cations?
Cations are metal ions that have a positive charge.
They are attracted to the opposite charge of a cathode.
What are cations attracted to?
They are attracted ti the opposite charge of a cathode- negative.
What test is used to identify the cations?
Flame test.
Describe the procedure for a flame test.
Get a strip of platinum wire and wash with concentrated HCL.
Get a sample of salt using the wire.
Hold wire with salt over a non luminous- blue- bunsen flame.
Note the colour of the flame.
What colour does lithium produce?
Crimson.
What colour does potassium produce?
Lilac.
What colour does barium produce?
Yellow.
Green.
What colour does strontium produce?
Red.
What colour does copper produce?
Green.
Blue.
What colour does sodium produce?
Yellow.
Orange.
What colour do the salts produce?
Lithium- crimson. Barium- yellow/green. Potassium- lilac. Strontium- red. Sodium- yellow/orange. Copper- green/blue.
