Surgical Nursing Flashcards

1
Q

What is a seroma, and how long can it remain after surgery?

A

Q

What are some of the preoperative considerations when dealing with a GDV?

A

GDV patients are usually in shock, and if left untreated they can die of cardiovascular collapse (as the enlarged stomach can compress the caudal vena cava affecting the venous return to the heart). When placing a catheter, it must be in the cephalic or jugular as the caudal part of the body is impaired.

Q

True or False: Most long bone fractures are not life-threatening and do not require emergency surgery?

A

True : when a patient with a fracture comes in, several steps must be taken to prepare for repair including stabilizing the animal with respect to all body systems, managing any open wound associated with the fracture, and immobilizing the fracture. Once these 3 steps have been achieved, fracture repair can be considered.

Q

What is important to consider when operating in the chest cavity (i.e., diaphragmatic hernia repair, thoracotomy, etc.)

A

Although necessary for the procedure, placing patients in dorsal recumbency can lead to severe respiratory compromise. As a surgical tech, you should be prepared to perform IPPV throughout the procedure, or hook up patient to ventilator if needed.

Q

For how long should an animal’s exercise be limited for after a routine surgery versus a orthopedic surgery?

A

A routine surgery usually requires 10-14 days of restricted activity while a orthopedic surgery will likely require 6-8 weeks of confinement.
MS, Student #10, McCurnin’s 10th ed.
pg. 1055

23
Q

When should perioperative antibiotics be given prior to surgery?

A

Antibiotics should be given no longer than 3-5 hours and at least 20 minutes before the surgical incision is made to allow therapeutic drug levels to be present in the wound fluid.
Student #4, EKH, McCurnin 9th ed. pg 1142

24
Q

How do we treat the abscess or infection of an incision site?

A

It should be treated with drainage, warm compresses, and antibiotics. When possible, aseptic aspiration of fluid or tissue under the incision should be performed for cytology before selecting the antibiotic.
MS, Student #10, McCurnin’s 10th ed.
pg. 1053

25
Q

What are some characteristics of intestinal devitalization?

A

MS, Student #10, McCurnin’s 10th ed.
pg. 1061-1062

26
Q

What temp should a small animal recovering post-op reach before turning off heat sources, such as a warm air blanket?

A

99-100 degrees F.

Student #4, EKH, McCurnin 9th ed. pg 1144.

27
Q
A
28
Q

What are the most common contributing factors to wound dehiscence?

A

Inappropriate choice of suture or suturing technique, tension on the incision, seroma formation, infection, and disease or drug factors that delay healing.

Student #1 MA McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1053

29
Q

What is an important piece of information to include in client education for a patient who has had a drain placed in order to prevent premature removal of the drain?

A

Animals with drains should also be fitted with an e-collar to prevent the animal from messing with the drain.

Student #1 MA McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1054

30
Q

If you are working up a patient with a suspect GDV, what imaging are you going to take to evaluate the position of the stomach once the patient is stabilized?

A

Right lateral abdominal radiograph

Student #1 MA McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1063

31
Q

If you are assisting with an ovariohysterectomy in a patient with pyometra and are asked to take a sample for culture of the contents of the uterus when and how would you do this?

A

A sample of the uterine contents should be collected aseptically once the uterus has been removed from the patient but before it has been contaminated. This prevents contaminating the abdomen with the contents.

Student #1 MA McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1069.

31
Q

What additional personal protective equipment should make sure to be kept on hand during gastrointestinal surgery?

A

Sterile gloves. Surgeons may require additional sterile gloves because the intestines are considered contaminated.

Student #1 MA McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 10 pg. 1061.

What is strike-through?

A

When wounds drain excessively, causing serum to seep through the bandage and extend to the external environment

CP Student #9 McCurnin 9th ed. pg. 1147

33
Q

What should be done as soon as induction drugs have been administered for an animal undergoing GI surgery?

A
