Surgical Nursing Flashcards
What is a seroma, and how long can it remain after surgery?
A seroma is when serum accumulates under the skin after being closed with suture, and it may persist for weeks.
ML, Student #6, McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1052
What are some of the preoperative considerations when dealing with a GDV?
GDV patients are usually in shock, and if left untreated they can die of cardiovascular collapse (as the enlarged stomach can compress the caudal vena cava affecting the venous return to the heart). When placing a catheter, it must be in the cephalic or jugular as the caudal part of the body is impaired.
ML, Student #6, McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1063
What is the first-degree common cause of dystocia on the maternal side?
Uterine inertia (lack of contraction)
ML, Student #6, McCurnin 10th Edition pg.1073
What is the primary indication for a perineal urethrostomy?
Multiple episodes of obstruction in association with feline urologic syndrome.
ML, Student #6, McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1075
True or False: Most long bone fractures are not life-threatening and do not require emergency surgery?
True : when a patient with a fracture comes in, several steps must be taken to prepare for repair including stabilizing the animal with respect to all body systems, managing any open wound associated with the fracture, and immobilizing the fracture. Once these 3 steps have been achieved, fracture repair can be considered.
ML, Student #6, McCurnin 10th Edition pg. 1084
What is the only part of the surgical gown that is considered sterile?
The front region from the shoulders to the waist.
BH, Student #5, McCurnin 9th Edition pg. 1122
What are the 3 parts of a surgical suite?
The prep area, scrub area and surgical room.
BH, Student #5 McCurnin 9th Edition pg. 1099
What must be placed inside of a wrapped pack to indicate whether the pack was sterilized or not?
An chemical indicator strip
BH, Student #5 McCurnin 9th Edition pg 1095
What chemical should you avoid putting in an open wound because it is cytotoxic and causes pain to the patient?
Alcohol
BH, Student #5 McCurnin 9th Edition pg. 1097
When performing a surgical hand scrub, how long does the soap need to be in contact with your skin?
Contact time should last 5 minutes
BH, Student #5 McCurnin 9th Edition pg. 1106
What are some indications for using prophylactic antibiotics?
-surgery times longer than 90 minutes
-immunosuppressd patients
-entering of a hollow viscus (GI tract or urinary bladder)
-entering of a joint, placement of orthopedic implants
-risk for potentially fatal infection (ex: neurosurgery)

How can PCV of fluid be helpful to evaluate presence of hemorrhage during surgery?
If the PCV of the sampled fluid (via abdominocentesis, thoracocentesis, or FNA) is similar to that of the systemic PCV, hemorrhage should be suspected.

McCurnin’s 9th ed. pg. 1143
Which procedure would be anticipated to be more painful?
A) OHE
B) small mass removal
C) fracture repair
C) Fracture repair

What is important to consider when operating in the chest cavity (i.e., diaphragmatic hernia repair, thoracotomy, etc.)
Although necessary for the procedure, placing patients in dorsal recumbency can lead to severe respiratory compromise. As a surgical tech, you should be prepared to perform IPPV throughout the procedure, or hook up patient to ventilator if needed.

Briefly explain the difference between elective and nonelective procedures.
Elective: typically done on healthy animals; non-urgent procedures; can be delayed
Nonelective: performed on compromised patients; must be done urgently to prevent severe complications and/or death

Abnormalities that can occur in early to a wound in its postoperative period?
Redness, swelling, draining and dehiscence.
LB, Student #2 McCurnin’s 9th ed.

What blood work should be taken before and after surgery if substantial blood loss occurs?
PVC and TP

When is is recommended for puppies/kittens to get vaccinated when they are scheduled for surgery?
2 weeks before
LB, Student #2 McCurnin’s 9th ed.
pg. 1141
Why do we want to watch/get informed about stake through on a bandage?
Bacteria has a better chance of causing infection due to the moisture of the wet bandage.
LB, Student #2 McCurnin’s 9th ed.
pg. 1146
What drain is not ideal due to the risk of ascending bacterial infection.
Passive drains

What factors during anesthesia contribute to hypothermia?
An open body cavity, fluids, and large clipping margins can all cause the body to lose heat.
