Surgical Flashcards
hemostats and forceps; must be rinsed thoroughly under cold water prior to disinfection and sterilization
Surgical Instruments
surgery that improves blood flow to the heart
Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
smooth irregular surfaces in bone
Grinding
-handwashing technique aimed at reducing infectious agents to a minimum from the fingernails, hands and forearms -involves a timed, 5-minute systematic scrub with antimicrobial soap -begins with the hands and progresses to the forearms -once complete, hands must be kept above elbows to prevent contamination from body areas not included in the scrub -skin is then dried thoroughly with sterile towel
Surgical Scrub
a pressure chamber used to sterilize equipment requiring elevated temperature and pressure -must be dated prior to processing or will have to be reprocessed and rewrapped -distilled water is the solution used for sterilization -sterilization indicators should be used to ensure the proper temperature, pressure and time are reached
Autoclave
stabilize structures for dissection
Holding
restore anatomical lumen
Dilating
removal of all or part of the breast
Mastectomy
assess distal anatomy
Probing
maintain surgical site, free of excess fluid; remove surgical debris/irrigation fluid
Suctioning
control blood loss
Clamping
increase disability of the operative site by displacing adjacent organs
Retracting
-surgical instruments must be placed gently to prevent dust scatter -always open any package away from the body -break down if someone touches it without sterile gloves, reaches across it or otherwise contaminates it
Sterile Field
is done using sterile thumb dressing forceps
Suture Removal
the process of making something free from bacteria or living microorganisms; always wear proper PPE like gloves when cleaning and disinfecting surgical instruments
Sterilization
