90 degree angle with aspiration; deep into the muscle
Intramuscular (IM)
15 degree angle without aspiration; just below the epidermis -purified protein derivative/tuberculosis (PPD/TB) -amount of tuberculin for a TB test is 0.1 mL -needle size should be 25-28 ga
Intradermal (ID)
45 degree angle with aspiration; under the skin -insulin injections
Subcutaneous (Sub Q)
-deltoid: lateral shoulder -vastus lateralis (upper lateral thigh): should be used to perform an intramuscular injection on an infant
Injection Sites
-always call the provider before giving an injection if the dosage is not listed on the patient’s chart or requisition
Injection Cautions
25 degree angle into bloodstream
