Surgery Flashcards
Open surgery
External surgical wound eg mastectomy
Closed surgery
Wound is internal e.g T.U.R.P
Minimal Access
Minimal external wounds, faster recovery time e.g. laparoscopic cholecystectomy
Palliative surgery
Performed to alleviate the symptoms of a disease, but does not cure e.g. colostomy to bypass bowel obstruction
Local or regional anaesthesia
The patient is conscious; the aim is to block the conduction of nerve impulses to and from specific sites in the body.
- infiltration
- topical
- Spinal (intrathecal) - local anaesthetic injected into the subarachnoid space between the 3rd and 4th lumbar vertebrae
Conscious Sedation
Conscious sedation is for patients who do not require full anaesthesia, but need some depression of consciousness. They must be able to breath by themselves and respond to verbal or tactile stimulation.
Regional anaesthesia
Regional anaesthesia results in the loss of sensation in a particular area or region of the body.
General Anaesthesia
General anesthesia is, essentially, a medically induced coma, not sleep. Drugs render a patient unresponsive and unconscious. They are normally administered intravenously (IV) or inhaled. Under general anesthesia, the patient is unable to feel pain and may also have amnesia
TED Stockings purpose
Support blood vessels
Prevent stasis
Prevent thrombus (clot) formation
