Q
The 3 Layers of the skin?
A
- Epidermis; the outermost layer of the skin, which provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone
- The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands
- The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.

Q
4 Cells of the epidermis?
A
- Keratinocytes: form epidermal keratin. They constitute 80% of the cellular population in the epidermis.
- Melanocytes: these produce melanin, the pigment that provides the skin with its colour and protects it from the sun’s rays.
- Langerhans cells: acting as gatekeepers, they provide immune defence, particularly in capturing allergens
- Merkel cells: originating from nerve cells, they are highly sensitive receptors involved in the sense of touch.
