They form when there is too much cholesterol in the bile and are most common among middle aged overweight females. Usually there are no symptoms, but if they become lodged in one of the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine, symptoms can include:

  • Severe and sudden pain in the upper right abdomen and possibly extending to the upper back
  • Fever and shivering
  • Severe nausea and vomiting
  • Jaundice
  • Clay coloured stools or dark urine

Treatment include:

  • surgery to remove the stones
  • medications to dissolve the stones.

Q

What are 2 age related changes that occur with the gastrointestinal system?

A
  1. As we age, peristalsis can slow down, causing the food to spend more time in the large intestine. This increases the amount of water absorbed and can cause constipation.
  2. The muscles in the oesophagus can slow down with age, potentially causing problems with swallowing.
  3. An increase in medication use can cause digestive problems. For example, some common medications can cause constipation, such as calcium channel blockers.

Q

What are some age related changes that effect the nervous system?

A
  1. The brain gradually loses neurons and brain cells, a process which speeds up at around age 60.
  2. There is also an increase in cholesterol content in the ageing spinal cord, which may potentially impair cord function.
  3. The hippocampus also loses a significant amount of neural tissue with age, which has an effect on memory and the acquisition of new skills.

And Hemorrhagic , when a blood vessel in the brain breaks or ruptures, resulting in blood seeping into brain tissue.

Symptoms include:

  • Weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body
  • Loss of vision or dimming in one or both eyes
  • Loss of speech

Q

Age related changes to the integumentary system

A
  1. Age spots - flat spots on the skin with more pigment than the surrounding area, can be caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. Cause no symptoms.
  2. Slowed down healing in the skin (speed of healing takes twice as long in an elderly person as in a young adult)
  3. Decline in glandular activity, which results in a reduction of the secretion of sebum. Perspiration production also declines, resulting in dry and flaky skin.

Leprosy: symptoms and treatment

A
Skin lesions
Sensory nerve damage
Eye nerve damage
Motor nerve damage
Autonomic nerve damage

Treatment:
Antibiotics and other medications.

17
Q

Problems that can occur in the Integumentary system

A
Leprosy
Burns
Cuts
Melanoma
Cellulitis
Eczema
Pressure Ulcers
18
Q

What is Rheumatoid arthritis?

A

Rheumatoid arthiritis is where the immune system produces antibodies that attach to the lining of joints. Immune system cells then attack the joints, causing inflammation, swelling, and pain.
Treatments include various oral or injectable medications that reduce immune system over-activity.

19
Q

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

A

The immune system attacks nerve cells, causing symptoms that can include pain, blindness, weakness, poor coordination, and muscle spasms. Treatments include immune system suppressants

20
Q

What are some problems that can occur in the Immune system?

A
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Lupus
  • Graves disease
  • Anaphylaxis
21
Q

Age related changes in the immune system?

A

The Body produces fewer immune cells and leukocytes, slowing down the healing process.

The immune system becomes slower to respond, which increases the risk of getting sick.

Autoimmune disorders are more likely to develop. (Diseases in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys healthy body tissues)

22
Q

What is anaphylaxis and what are 2 symptoms?

A

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction. symptoms include

  • swelling of the lips, face and eyes
  • swelling of the tongue
  • breathing difficulty
  • abdominal pain
  • vomiting or a sudden drop in blood pressure
23
Q

What is systemic lupus erythematosus and what are 2 symptoms?

A

systemic lupus erythematosus the most common form of lupus (a chronic condition that results from a malfunctioning immune system)
Symptoms include:

  • skin rashes
  • joint and muscle pain
  • fatigue
  • mouth and nose ulcers
  • chest pain
  • anaemia
  • poor kidney function
  • seizures
  • fever
24
Q

What is Erectile dysfunction, symptoms and treatment?

A

erectile disfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sexual intercourse. Treatment includes:
Viagra

25
Q

What is chlamydia and what are some symptoms and treatment?

A
Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that can effect the cervix and spread to the uterus and fallopian tubes in women. Symptoms include:
In women
Unusual vaginal discharge
Burning feeling when urinating
Pain during sex
Bleeding or spotting between periods
bleeding after sex
Lower abdominal pain

In men
Discharge from penis
Discomfort when urinating
Sore, swollen testes

Chlamydia can be treated with a single dose of antibiotic if detected early; otherwise longer doses of antibiotics may be required.

26
Q

What is gonorrhea? 2 symptoms

A

Gonorrhea is a STI that can effect the cervix in females, as well as the urethra, rectum or throat in both genders.

Symptoms are:
In men
- Painful urination
- Pus like discharge from tip of penis
- Pain or swelling in one testicle

In women

  • Increased vaginal discharge
  • Painful urination
  • Vaginal bleeding between periods
  • Painful intercourse
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain
27
Q

What is prostatic hypertrophy?

A

Prostatic hypertrophy is enlargement of the prostate gland that commonly arises after you reach the age of 40.

There are usually no symptoms at the start. Then symptoms are:

  • inability to completely empty the bladder when peeing (urinary retention)
  • poor urine flow
  • urgent need to pee
  • dribbling of urine at the end of peeing
  • bladder infections
28
Q

What are some age related changes with the reproductive system

A

In men:
the testes continue to produce sperm, but the rate of sperm production slows. The epididymis, seminal vesicles, and prostate gland lose some of their surface cells

In women:
Menopause (periods stopping completely, usually occurs between 45 and 55)

Resulting loss of oestrogen can also cause cardiovascular disease can become more prevalent in women, as oestrogen reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood vessels.

29
Q

Potential problems with the reproductive system:

A
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Prostatic hypertrophy
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhoea
  • infertility
