Surface Decoration Flashcards
What is dope dyeing?
When the die is added to the spinning solution of man made fibres.
What is stock dyeing?
When textiles fibres are dyed in a loose form.
What is colour fastness?
Colour fastness is a term used in the dyeing of textile materials, meaning resistance of the material’s colour to fading or running.
Fabrics might need to have fastness because..?
So it can be: Bleached Dry cleaned washed Light (sun) Rubbing Perspiration.
What are the different stages in which dyeing can take place?
Dope dyeing Stock dyeing Yarn dyeing Piece dyeing Garment dyeing
What are the three main types of industrial printing?
Screen, block and roller and transfer printing.
Talk through rotary screen printing.
The screens are cylindrical and their circumference determines the size of the print. The printing paste is pumped into the cylinders and squeezes through the fine mesh screen on the fabric moving beneath.
Talk through flat-bed printing.
The fabric is laid out flat on a surface. A screen moves along the fabric one screen width at a time, the screen is lowered and the paste is squeezed through the mesh then goes onto the next section.
What is block and roller?
The roller has a copper surface which has a cut design on, each roller is used for a different colour. The paste is fed into the roller and pressed onto the fabric passing below. The design is built up by having more than one roller with different patterns.
What is transfer printing?
The application of heat and special dyes. These dyes are on paper and with high temps it causes the dye to change into gas and attach themselves to the fabric when they return solid.
What is discharge printing?
The fabric is dyed first, then over printed with a chemical paste to distort the dye. The ares which have been destroyed show a different colour to the background.
