What is the health and safety at work act (1974) ?
Identifies risks, assesses them and actively seeks ways of controlling them. It also identifies safe practice plans provides training and supervision.
What does the risk assessment cover?
The design of the machinery and tools being used The layout of the workshop Dust and fume extraction Use and storage of chemicals Training in the workplace Safety devices and procedures
Product safety. What needs to be considered?
Fabric - burns or melts easily?
Fibres - babies putting things in their mouth, could they get lodged in?
Fastenings - small parts easily swallowed or choked on?
Temperature - does it need padding to provide insulation?
Sharp edges - does it have firm corners which aren’t padded?
Why is health and safety important?
Workers could be INJURED
This would mean they would need TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT which is EXTRA COST
Equipment REPAIRS might need to be carried out - might be out of use which delays production
