Q

What are cut pile fabrics?

A

Cut pile fabrics are when a fabric has a third yarn system to form a cut pile on the surface of the fabric. Eg velvet

10
Q

What are uncut loop pile weaves?

A

The pile warp (third yarn) remains slack and loops above and below the fabric to form the pile, eg towelling fabric.

Q

What are coloured woven fabrics?

A

Colour woven fabrics achieve their pattern effects by using dyed warp and weft yarns in various combinations.

Q

What is double cloth fabric?

A

When four or more yarn systems are used, effectively two fabrics, one on top of each other which are linked to each other. Adds strength and weight.

15
Q

Name features of satin weaves.

A
Warp yarn "floats" over weft yarn,
Frays easily
Have a right and wrong side
Made from filament yarns
"Floats" snag, not very hard wearing

16
Q

Name features of twill weave.

A

Hardest wearing weave,
More complicated therefore more expensive,
There’s a right and wrong side,
Uneven surface therefore shows less dirt,
Fabric is firmer which is more likely to fray.

17
Q

Name features of plain weave.

A

Simplest therefore the cheapest,
Plain surface which is good for printing,
Firm and strong fabric,
Same on both sides.

18
Q

What is a course, and what is a wale?

A

A course is the row of loops going horizontal (left and right)
A wale is the vertical row of loops (up and down)

19
Q

What are the two types of knit?

A

Weft and warp.

20
Q

Name some features of weft knit.

A
Lots of stretch,
Drapes softly,
Doesn't crease easily,
Traps air - good insulator,
Ladders easily if snagged,
Obvious back and front.
21
Q

Name some weft knit variations?

A

Plain and single jersey,
Rib fabric,
Jacquard,
Double piqué.

22
Q

Polyester fleece is weft knit, and has an extra yarn knitted in and brushed on both sides. True or false.

A

True.

23
Q

State features of the warp knit.

A

Less stretchy,
Doesn’t ladder,
More variety of fabrics,
Faster production, therefore it is the cheapest method.

24
Q

State a few variations of warp knit.

A

Tricot, velour, lace.

25
Q

What are non-woven fabrics?

A

When the fabric is structured with only fibres and not made up into a yarn.

26
Q

Two methods of non woven fabrics are..?

A

Bonding or felting.

27
Q

Felts can be done by wool or needle. Describe these process.

A

Wool - animal fibres become entangles into a felt with heat, pressure and alkaline liquids.

Needle - a bulky fibre web is repeatedly penetrated by lots of needles. This drags a number of fibres to the lower side of the web forming loops.

28
Q

How are bonded fabrics produced?

A

Made with webs of synthetic fibres bonded together with heat or adhesives. These aren’t as strong, but cheap to produce.

29
Q

Name the main features of non-woven constructions.

A
Cheap to manufacture as they are made straight from fibre,
No grain line, so cheaper to use,
Don't fray,
Not as strong,
Do not drape as well.
