Surface Anatomy Flashcards
where is the clavicle palpated?
easily palpated especially where medial ends articulate with sternum
what do clavicles demarcate?
superior division btwn zones of lymphatic drainage
where is the sternum palpated?
palpated throughout
jugular notch: palpated btwn prominent medial ends of clavicles
what is seen during sternal angle palpation in youth?
palpable and seen in young people bc of movement at manubrosternal joint during respiration
Superior Vena Cava positioning
inferiorly deep to manubrium and manubriosternal junction
where is the body of sternum palpated?
intermammary cleft: midline depression btwn breasts overlies sternal body
where is the Xiphoid process palpated?
lies in epigastric fossa
-used as guide in pulmonary resuscitation
what forms costal margins?
formed by joined costal cartilages of ribs 7-10
easily palpable bc they lie inferiolaterally from the xiphisternal joint
what forms the infrasternal angle?
costal margins converging
What are the thoracic walls palpable features?
- midsternal line (AML)
- midclavicular line (MCL)
- anterior axillary line (AAL)
- mid axillary line (MAL)
- posterior axillary line (PAL)
- midvertebral line
- scalpular lines
where do you palpate the midsternal line?
the intersection of the median plane with the anterior thoracic wall
where do you palpate the midclavicular line (MCL)?
the midpoint of the clavicle (parallel to midsternal line)
where do you palpate the anterior axillary line (AAL)?
vertically along the anterior axillary fold formed by the inferiolateral border of the pec major (from ribcage) to humerus
where do you palpate the midaxillary line (MAL)?
the apex (deepest point) of axillary fossa (armpit) to the AAL in parallel
where do you palpate the posterior axillary line?
vertically along posterior axillary fold formed by latissimus dorsi and teres major muscles spanning from the back to humerus
