Anterior Abdominal Wall Flashcards
What are the actions of the abdominal walls?
contract to increase intra-abdominal pressure
distend to accomodate expansions of pregnancy, fat deposition, pathology
what are the characteristics of the abdominal cavity?
- forms part of the abdominopelvic cavity
- has no floor (continuous with pelvic cavity)
- extends to thoracic cage + greater pelvis
- is the location of most digestive organs, parts of the urogenital system + spleen
What are the actions of the abdominal walls?
contract to increase intra-abdominal pressure
distend to accomodate expansions of pregnancy, fat deposition, pathology
what is the subcutaneous tissue of the anterolateral abdominal wall (inferior to the umbilical) reinforced with?
elastic collagen fibers that make 2 layers:
superficial fatty layer (camper fascia)
deep membranous layer (scarpa fascia)
what are the 4 transverse planes of the abdomen? what do they pass through?
- subcostal plane: 10th costal cartilage
- transtubular plane: iliac tubercles + L5 vertebra
- transpyloric: gall bladder, pancreas, superior mesenteric artery, kidneys
- interspinous: anterior superior iliac spine
what planes divide the upper and lower, right and left into 4 quadrants?
- transumbilical plane: upper, lower
2. median plane: left, right
location of anterolateral abdominal wall
extends from thoracic cage to pelvis
where do the subcutaneous tissue layers end?
fatty layer: to thighs
membranous layer: before thighs
what covers the 3 muscle layers of the anterolateral abdominal walla nd their aponeurosis?
very thin superficial, intermediate, deep layers of investing fascia (not easily separated)
what is aponeurosis?
white sheet of fibrous tissue
takes place of tendon
has wider attachment
what makes up the endoabdominal fascia?
internal abdominal wall is made up of membranous and areolar sheets of tissue
what kind of muscles make up the anterolateral wall?
3 flat pairs, 2 vertical pairs
what forms the linea alba?
interweaving aponeurosis (btwn right + left, superficial + intermediate) forming a midline raphe
what does the linea alba span?
from xiphoid process to pubic symphysis
what is the pyramidalis muscle?
small triangular muscle anterior to inferior part of rectus abdominis
