Who were the Pankhursts and what did they do

  • In 1903 Emmeline Pankhurst started the Women’s Social and Political Union, which began its militant campaigns in 1905, sometimes using violence in an effort to win women the vote.
  • Sylvia, Christabel, and Adela were the daughters of Emmeline Pankhurst
  • Sylvia, Christabel and Adela joined their mothers fight for women’s suffrage
  • Sylvia broke away in 1912 because her sister Christabel ordered WSPU members to use violence, and Sylvia was distressed.

Who was Emily Davison and what did she do

A
  • Emily Davison was a suffragette who fought for women’s suffrage in Britain in the early twentieth century
  • 1906: she joined the WSPU
  • 1909: she gave up her job and went to work full-time for the suffragette movement.
  • She was frequently arrested for acts such as causing public disturbance & burning post boxes and spent a number of short periods in jail.
  • On 4 June 1913, she ran out in front of the king’s horse and tried to grab it by the reins at his the Epsom Derby. Her purpose was unclear, but she was trampled on and kicked furiously by Anmer and died on 8 June from her injuries.

Who was Constance Lytton and what did she do

A
  • Constance Lytton was a British suffragette activist, writer, & campaigner for prison reform, votes for women, and birth control.
  • Witnessing the Pankhurst’s on trial showed her the necessity of votes for women and she went to prison for the cause
  • By 1909 the suffragettes were hunger striking and the government force feeding Constance decided on her most radical step yet: to go to prison in disguise.
  • With the name Jane Warton, she cut her hair, put on glasses and ugly clothes and got herself arrested. Once in prison, she was force-fed 8 times before her identity was discovered and she was released.
