What is suddent infant death syndrome
death which remain unexplained after a post mortem -peak at 2-4m old (90% before 6)
Most common cause of death between 1m and 1y
RF - front sleeping baby, premmie, LBW, male, maternal smoking, microenvironement (pillow, duvet, heat)
protective -dummies, breast feeding, room sharing
Police and coroner always called in
Mx -avoidance
sleep -
supine position (on back) - for 1st 6 m
(does increase chance of flattened occiput, which can be reduced with supervised tummy time when awake
Avoid overheating baby -no heavy wrapping or high room temp
feet-to-gfoot position
General - share a room with baby for 1st 6m
Never sleep in sofa or armchair
Do-not sleep together with baby
breastfeed if possible
Keep baby smoke free -during preganncy and after birth
