Succession Flashcards
what is succession?
- succession is the progressive change of communities over time
- change in a natural feature of dynamic ecosystems and occurs on different scales
what are the two different scales of succession
- small scale disturbances include a tree falling in the forest or wombat digging a burrow
- large disturbances include catastrophic events such as a volcanic eruption, cyclones, earthquakes and tsunamis.
what is nudation?
no organism inhabit environment because of catastrophic event
what is primary succession?
Primary succession is a development and change in plant communities over time, leading eventually bare ground to a climax community
what do you call the community stages in primary succession?
sere
what are pioneer species
Pioneer species are resilient species that are the first to colonize barren environments, or to repopulate previously biodiverse steady-state ecosystems that have been disrupted by natural disaster
what are the four steps to form the phases of Primary Succession
- Nudation
- Invasion
- Competition and Reaction
- Stabilisation
what is secondary succession?
is the successive communities in an area where a previous community has been removed
