From Sunlight to biomass Flashcards
1
Q
what is a ecosystem?
A
- a community of living things together with their abiotic environment through which energy flows and matter is cycled
- energy comes in and out
2
Q
what is an autotroph
A
- autotroph = make it owns food
- e.g plants make their own glucose (photosynthesis)to gain nutrients energy source- light
- autotroph take 6 carbon dioxide molecules and 12 water molecules and using energy source they will convert these molecules to 1 molecule of glucose and 6 molecules of water
3
Q
what is chemosynthesis
A
chemosynthesis: energy source- chemical energy
4
Q
what is photosynthesis
A
takes place in two stages the light dependent stage and light independent stages
5
Q
explain the light-dependent stage
A
- happens on the thylakoid membranes of the grana
- chlorophyl in thylakoid
- use light energy to make two molecules needed for the next stage of photosynthesis: the energy storage molecule ATP and the reduced electron carrier NADPH.
6
Q
explain the light-independent stage
A
- stroma of the chloroplasts
- Carbon dioxide is modified by series of chemical reactions to form carbohydrates.
7
Q
what are the 6 Steps of the Light dependent & dependent stage
A
- 12 water molecules go into the thylakoid in the light dependent stage
- 12 oxygen + 24 hydrogen atoms
- power of sunlight hydrogen is split from oxygen
- all oxygens through water molecules are thrown away as oxygen gas ( 6 oxygen molecules)
- 6 carbon dioxide molecules go into light independent stage ( 6 carbons, 12 oxygens)
- 1 glucose and half oxygens and 6 water molecules
8
Q
what is biomass and its job?
A
- producing organic compounds form inorganic compounds
- dry weight of an organism
9
Q
what are the two types of primary productivity
A
gross: amount of biomass
nett: biomass after its used its share of energy (glucose)
