Substance Use Disorders
Disorders that involve chronic difficulties in resisting the desire to drink alcohol or use drugs
Defining features
- Intoxication
- Withdrawal
- Abuse
- Dependence
Substance
Any natural or synthesized product that has psychoactive effects
- Changing thoughts, emotions, an/or behaviour
Intoxication
Behavioral and psychological changes that occur as a result of physiological effects of a substance on the central nervous system
- Can be significantly maladaptive
- Can occur in people with and without disorder
- Exact symptoms depend on setting, type of substance, quantity, timing, expectations
Tolerance
Diminished effects form the same dose
- Will occur in people who are dependent
- Different drugs have different risk to tolerance
Withdrawal
Physiological and behavioral symptoms that emerge when substance use stops or greatly reduced after prolonged period
- Can result in significant distress or impairment
- Many will go back to the substance to relieve symptoms
Common withdrawal symptoms
- Irritability
- Sweating
- Trouble sleeping
- Tremors
- Restlessness
- Depression or dysphoria
Substance use disorder
Cognitive, behavioral, physiological symptoms from substance use despite significant associated problems
- need at least 2 of 4 problems over the course of a year
(impaired control, social problems, risky use, physical dependence)
Impaired Control
- Using more of a substance or more often than intended
- Wanting to cut down or stop using but not being able to
- Craving
Social Problems
- Neglecting responsibilities and relationships
- Giving up activities they used to care about because of their substance use
- Inability to complete tasks at home school or work
Risk use
- Using in risky settings
- Continued use despite known problems
- legal impacts
Physical dependence
- Needing more of the substance to get the same effect
- Having withdrawal symptoms when a substance isn’t used
Alcohol
- Depressant
- Heavy dose causes depression, fatigue, lethargy, decreased motivation, confusion, sleep disturbances, stupor, coma or death
- Heavy drinking: 5 or more days per month
- Binge drinking: 4 or 5 or more drinks in 2 hours
Depressant
Slows the central nervous system
Withdrawal symptoms of alcohol abuse
STAGE 1
- Shakes, weakness, perspiration, nausea, cramps, anxiety, mild hallucinations
STAGE 2
- Convulsive seizures
STAGE 3
- Delerium tremens (intense hallucinations, delusions, disorientation, agitation, aggression, confusion)
- only 10% of people reach stage 2 or 3
