Neurodevelopment disorders
- Overarching disorder category in DSM-5
- Conditions with onset in the developmental period
- Generally more common in boys than girls
- All have relatively significant genetic components or environmental causes that are developmental in nature
- Highly comorbid with one another
What % of children with ADHD meet criteria for ASD
30-65%
Examples of neurodevelopmental disorders
ADHD, Autism spectrum disorder, Communication disorders, specific learning disorders, neurodevelopmental motor disorders
Neurodivergent
Non-medical term used to describe people whose brains function differently than the typical population
- usually associated with different strengths and challenges than the typical population
Disorders under ASD
Autistic disorder
Asperger’s disorder
Child Disintegrative disorder
NOS pervasive development disorder
ASD
Need two or more of the following;
- Repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech
- Inflexible adherence to routine
- Fixated interests
- Hyper or hyperactivity to sensory input
Persistent deficits in social communication and interaction cause restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior and interests which cause communication issues
- repetitive sensorimotor behaviours and insistence on sameness
ADHD subtypes
Predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive or impulsive, combined
ADHD Symptoms criteria
- Have occurred before age 12
- Be present for at least 6 months
- Be at odds with developmental level
- Occur in at least two settings
- Not be explained by another disorder
