Research Flashcards
Correlation Study
Study examining the relationship between independent and dependent variable without manipulating either variable
Continuous variable
A variable measured along a continuum
- most common type of variable in abnormal psychology
Correlation coefficient
A statistic used to represent the relationship between variables (r)
- can fall between -1 and +1
Statistical Significance
An index of how likely it is that the result occurred simply by chance
Third variable problem
Possibility that variables not measured in a study are the real cause of the relationship between the variables measured in the study
What is the purpose of a control group
To control for third variables
Demand Characteristics
Factors in an experiment that suggest to participants how the experimenter would like them to behave
Therapy Outcome studies
- Experimental studies designed to test specific therapy
- effectiveness of therapy effectiveness can produce evidence that reducing certain causes reduces psychopathology
- Can support hypothesis about what the causes is
How is efficacy of therapy tested
Highly controlled settings with a narrowly defined group of people
How is effectiveness tested
By assessing how well treatment works in real-world settings
