Substance Use Disorder
A problematic pattern of substance use leading to clinically significant impairment or distress marked by increase of alcohol tolerance and withdrawal, within a 12-month period.
Substance Intoxication
Recent ingestion of a substance that presents clinically significant problematic behavioral or psychological changes.
Substance Withdrawal
Cessation of or reduction of a substance that has been heavy or prolonged resulting in symptoms that cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.
Increased Use
A person may start out consuming sell amounts, but end up using more than they intended.
Control Issues
The person wants to control use, reduce use, or repeatedly fails in attempts to control or quit.
Time Investment
The person spends a good deal of time using and/or acquiring the substance.
Craving
The person has physical and mental urges for the substance.
Obligations Shirked
Persons abandon their roles at home, in the community, or at work in favor of using their substance,
Worsening Interpersonal/Social Relations
As the person continues to use, their relationships suffer.
Reduction of other Activities
Persons commonly ignore work and social activities in favor of substance use.
Physical Dangers Ignored
Persons ignore harm that can occur to others or themselves due to substance use.
Psychological/Medical Warning Ignored
Persons may ignore physician warnings about health issues despite well known risks.
Tolerance
A need for markedly increased amounts of a substance to achieve intoxication or desired effect or a markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of a substance.
Withdrawal
A substance, or a closely related substance, is used to treat or avoid symptoms associated with cessation or reduction of a substance that has been previously heavily or prolongedly used.
