Denial
refusal to accept a known truth in order to protect oneself from it
Rationalization
cover up actions with a different reason, explain actions/ feelings contrary to your true motivation
Regression
returning to an earlier stage of development
Suppression
put out of one’s consciousness, (psychology) the conscious exclusion of unacceptable thoughts or desires
Sublimation
channeling of unacceptable impulses, thoughts, and emotions into more acceptable ones.
Overcompensation
exaggerating opposite of unwanted trait in an attempt to overcome it
Assertiveness
emphasis of a person’s needs or thoughts in a manner that is respectful, direct, and firm
Compartmentalization
a mild state of dissociation, parts of oneself are separated from awareness of other parts and behaving as if one had separate sets of values.
Intellectualization
try to avoid emotions by thinking about something logically
Passive-aggression
indirect expression of hostility, such as through procrastination, hostile jokes, stubbornness, resentment, sullenness, or deliberate/repeated failure to accomplish requested tasks for which one is (often explicitly) responsible.
Avoidance
refusing to deal with unpleasant/uncomfortable objects/ situations
Dissociation
when a person has gone through some traumatic experience, and they try to escape by using a memory gap which causes them to disconnect from the real world and especially that situation.
Humor
Use comedy or situational irony to make yourself feel better in a tough situation
Projection
taking own insecurities/unacceptable thoughts or feelings and blaming/ putting them on others
Acting out
expressing one’s emotions through physical actions
Repression
exclusion of distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings from the conscious mind
Displacement
taking out frustrations, feelings, and impulses on people or objects less threatening.
Compensation
make up for shortcomings or a feeling of inferiority by exaggerating/ emphasizing good qualities
Altruism
The individual deals with emotional conflict or internal or external stressors by dedication to meeting the needs of others.
General Personality Disorder
An enduring pattern of inner experience and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual’s culture.
Paranoid Personality Disorder
A pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent. Begins by early adulthood.
Schizoid Personality Disorder
A pervasive pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of emotions in interpersonal settings. Begins by early adulthood.
