- an umbrella term for substance use disorders as well as other addictive disorders that interfere with one’s ability to function

- patterns of negative symptoms as a result of an individual continuously using a harmful substance
- alcohol use disorder

- cannabis use disorder
- stimulant use disorder (cocaine, methamphetamine, etc)

Signs and symptoms of substance use disorders
A
- change in sleeping habits
- increased irritability
- lack of motivation
- hallucinations
- trouble managing responsibilities at work, school, or home
- inability to focus
- withdrawal symptoms

Comorbidities with substance use disorders
A
- depression
- anxiety
- PTSD
- personality disorders (antisocial and borderline)
- a cycle that is difficult to escape
- risk factors = early exposure to substances/addiction (parents/ neighborhood, etc)

A
- lack of motivation or energy to take care of one self
- may neglect appearance
- cognitive and sensory-motor problems leading to dangerous situations and risky behaviors
- challenges in communication, social skills, emotional regulation, establishing, and maintaining intimate relationships
- problems in all performance skills (sensorimotor, cognitive, and psychosocial areas)
- negative impact on employment, financial stability, and personal health)

A
- may neglect personal hygiene and grooming, bathing/showering, and dressing
- eating and swallowing, feeding
- some substances alter a person’s appetite
- functional mobility
- some drugs cause a lack of coordination, dizziness, and increased fall risk
- sexual activity
- drug use can lead to unsafe behaviors such as unprotected sex

A
- care of pets and animals, child rearing
- may neglect pet or child, have difficulties with parental monitoring, harm the baby’s growth and development in the womb
- communication management = slurred or rapid or rambling speech
- driving and community mobility and safety and emergency maintenance
- driving or doing risky things under influence
- financial management
- may spend money on drugs when cannot afford to
- meal preparation and cleanup
- potential difficulty with executive functioning and preparing nutritious food
- religious and spiritual expression
- using drugs or drinking can impact your sense of peace and how it feels to be you

- increased blood pressure and heart rate, sleep problems, teeth decay, ongoing cough, and frequent lung problems, tremores, nausea or vomiting, damage to organs
- more likely to get infectious disease like HIV (through sharing needles or unsafe sex)
