Suboccipital Region Flashcards
Superficial and intermediate muscle
Trapezius SCM Levator scapulae Splenius capitis Splenius cervicis
Splenius capitis and cervicis
Posterior rami- C1-6
Extends neck and head
Flexes and rotates to the same side
Semispinalis capitis
C4-T7 transverse process to occipital bone
Extends cervical spine
Bend to same side and rotates to opposite side
Longissimus capitis
C4-7 transverse processes to mastoid process
Extends head, flexes and rotates head to same side
Posterior rami
Rectus capitis Posterior major and minor
Major- C2 spinous process to inferior nuchal line
Minor- C1 posterior tubercle to inferior nuchal line
Extends head, rotates to same side
Suboccipital nerve
Obliquus capitis superior and inferior
Superior- C1 transverse process to occipital bone
Extends head, tilts head to same side, rotates it to opposite side
Inferior- C2 spinous process to C1 transverse process
Extends head, rotates to same side
Suboccipital nerve
Nerves of suboccipital region
Suboccipital C1
Greater occipital C2
Least occipital C3
Blood vessels suboccipital region
Occipital artery from external carotid
Vertebral artery from subclavian
Deep cervical vein
Occipital veins run with the suboccipital nerve
Occipital vein joins the deep cervical vein
Ends near transverse process of C7 vertebral artery
Vertebral arteries
Many small veins of internal vertebral plexus to form vessel through foreman transversarium (atlas)
Runs until C6, leaves foramen to join brachiocephalic vein
