Infratemporal Fossa And TMJ Flashcards
Infratemporal fossa
Space beneath base of skull, between skull and ramus of mandible
Infratemporal fossa boundaries
Anterior- posterior surface of maxilla Posterior- styloid process Superior- infratemporal surface of the greater wing of sphenoid Medial- lateral pterygoid plate Lateral- ramus of the mandible
Contents of the infratemporal fossa
Lateral and medial pterygoid Mandibular division of trigeminal and branches Maxillary artery and branches Pterygoid venous plexus Chorda tympani Optic ganglion
Maxillary artery
Deep temporal, masseteric and pterygoid branches to muscles
Passes between 2 heads of lateral pterygoid to go into pterggomaxillary fissure
3 parts of maxillary artery
Mandibular
Pterygoid
Pterygopalatine- posterior superior alveolar, infraorbital, anterior superior alveolar, palatine, pharyngeal and sphenopalatine
Pterygoid venous plexus
Surrounds lateral pterygoid
Veins from orbit, nasal and oral cavities
Communicates with cavernous sinus and facial vein
Drained by maxillary vein
Temporomandibular joint
Synovial joint between head of mandible and maindular fossa
Articular surface- fibrocartilage
Fibrous capsule
Nerve- auriculotemporal and masseteric
Capsule reinforced by lateral temporomandibular ligament
Sphenomandibular and stylomandibular ligament
