Parotid Gland And Temporal Region Flashcards
Parotid gland
Salivary gland- acini
Connective tissue capsule and dense fibrous capsule that extends as stylomandoibular ligament
Single duct below zygomatic arch
Parotid duct
Pieces buccal fat pad and Buccinator to enter oral cavity at upper second molar
If masseter tensed becomes palpable
Superficial temporal vessels and auriculotemporal nerve
Posterior auricle veins and artery
Facial vein and artery
Transverse facial artery
Nerve supply to parotid gland
Parasympathetic motor supply form glossopharyngeal
Muscles of mastication
Masseter Temporalis Lateral pterygoid Medial pterygoid All mandibular division of trigeminal
Movements of mandible
Elevation Depression Protrusion Retrusion Lateral chewing
Temporalis
Temporal fascia
Temporal fossa and fascia to coronoid process and anterior border of the ramus of the mandible
Anterior and superior fibres elevate mandible
Posterior fibres retract mandible
Masseter
Zygomatic arch to lateral aspect of the ramus of the mandible
Elevates mandible
Masseteric nerve form anterior division of trigeminal
Lateral pterygoid
Upper head- infratemporal surface of greater wing of sphenoid
Lower head- lateral surface of the lateral pterygoid plate
Inserts into neck of mandible and articulate disc
Pulls neck of mandible forwards with articular disc
Helps in lateral chewing movements with medial pterygoid
Nerve to lateral pterygoid- anterior divison of mandibular of trigeminal
Medial pterygoid
Superficial head from the tubercle of the maxilla
Deep head from medial surface of lateral pterygoid plate
Inserts into medial surface of the angle of the mandible
Assists in elevation
Nerve to medial pterygoid, from mandibular of trigeminal
Anterior divisions of mandibular division of trigeminal
Masseteric
Nerve to lateral pterygoid
2 deep temporal
Posterior divisions of mandibular division of trigeminal
Auriculotemporal
Lingual
Mandibular division of trigeminal
Anterior
Posterior
Nerve to Medial pterygoid
External carotid artery
Ends in terminal branches= maxillary ands superficial temporal behind neck of mandible
Posterior branches of external carotid artery
Occipital- crossed by hypoglossal nerve, passes under posterior belly of Digastric to post triganle
Posterior auricular- level of upper border of belly of Digastric
Ascending pharyngeal- ascends between internal carotid and pharynx
