Orbit Flashcards
Bones
Frontal Zygomatic Maxilla Ethmoid Lacrimal Sphenoid
Orbital content
Eyeball Fat and connective tissue Extraocular Muscles Nerves Blood vessels
Tarsal plates
Dense connective tissue
Glands
Support eyelids
Ligaments of eyeball
Suspensory ligaments support eyeball
Check ligament restrict medial and lateral recti
Retina
Rods and cones
Blind spot= optic disc
Macula lutes= fovea
Aqueous humor
Anterior lens, helps to maintain intraocular pressure
Made by ciliary body, drains into corneo-scleral junction
Vitreous humor (body)
Embryological
Transparent jelly
Posterior to lens
Supports retina
Intraocular (intrinsic) muscles
Dilator pupillae increases the diameter of the pupil
Sphincter pupillae decreases the diameter
Ciliary muscle
Intrinsic eye muscle- change shape of lens for accommodation- oculomotor nerve
Extraocular (extrinsic) Muscles
7 extraocular Muscles- levator palpebrae
Superior, inferior, medial and lateral recti from annular ring to sclera
Superior oblique and inferior oblique to sclera
Eyeball muscle
Levator palpebrae- raises eyelid- oculomotor
Superior rectus- elevation, adduction, intorsion- oculomotor
Inferior rectus- depression, adduction, extortion-oculomotor
Medial rectus- adduction- oculomotor
Lateral rectus- abduction- abducent
Superior oblique- intorsion, depression, abduction- trochlear
Inferior oblique- extortion, elevation, abduction- oculomotor
