SU/Non SU Flashcards
Sulfonylurea examples
Glimerpiride
Glipizide
Glyburide
Non-sulfonylurea examples
Nateglinide
Repaglinide
(Non) - Sulfonylurea MOA
Bind to extracellular “sulfonylurea-R subunit” of K+-ATP channels of beta cell –> K+-ATP channel closure –> depolarization –> inc activation of volt gated Ca channels –> inc insulin secretion
Still increases insulin secretion even if plasma glucose becomes too low
SU & Non-SU AE
Hypoglycemia
Weight gain
Skin rash/sun sensitivity (SU)
SU & Non-SU consideration
Will not work in T1DM due to no beta cells
Which SU are converted to inactive metab by liver?
Glipizide
Glimepiride
Glyburide excretion
50% renal active metab or unchanged drugs
50% feces
Which SU have intermediate dosing (10-24) hrs
Glipizide
Which SU have long dosing?
Glyburide (QD–> BID beyond 10 mg)
Glimepride
