Study Guide Chapter 8 Flashcards
What is photosynthesis ?
Process that manufactures Sugar (glucose)
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis ?
6CO2+6H2O—>C6H12O6+6O2
Examine chemical equations for respiration and photosynthesis?
The equation for cellular respiration is the direct opposite of photosynthesis.
C6H12O6+6O2—>6CO2+6H2O
How are plants and animals dependent on each other ?
The products of each of these reactions initiate the other reaction.
Autotroph VS Heterotroph
Autotroph are knows as producers bc they are able to make their own food from raw materials and energy, heterotroph are consumers they consume producers or other consumers.
Light dependent VS light independent
Light dependent create O2 from H2O, ATP, NADPH occurs in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast
Light independent create glucose using CO2 (the Calvin cycle) occurs in the stroma of the chloroplast
Chlorophyll VS carotenoids
Chlorophyll absorb photons of light
Carotenoids different energy absorbing pigments absorbs wavelengths chlorophyll doesn’t
What is the purpose of photosynthesis
To transform water sunlight into carbon dioxide into oxygen and simple sugar (glucose) that plant uses as fuel
What two set reactions are included
Light dependent and light independent
What is chloroplast and what are is component parts
Organelle which captures photons of light from the sun
Thylakoid, lumen, stroma,chlorophyll
What is the general purpose and product of photosynthesis 1?
Makes ATP, uses light energy to produce the high energy carriers ATP and NADPH shuttle electrons and photons
What is the general purpose and products of photosynthesis 2
Moves electrons and hydrogen + (protons) across thylakoid membrane
Creates gradient that will later be used to make ATP
What is chlorophyll and what does it do ?
The name of the green pigment that plants use to make food during a process called photosynthesis
Absorbs photons of light
Why is it necessary to have both photosystem 1 & 2
There is not enough energy to provided from a single photon to produce the energy carrying molecule needed like NADPH
What are the three phases of the Calvin Cycle
Fixation, reduction, regeneration
