Structures and Properties Flashcards
Learn all this
How much energy do strong forces need?
They need lots of energy thus having a high boiling temperature and a high melting temperature
Intramolecular forces
The bonding forces that hold atoms of a molecule together. In a water molecule the oxygen is bonded to two hydrogen atoms. Intra meaning within the molecule.
Solid ionic bonds are called what?
When an ionic bond occurs, the bond is considered a giant ionic lattice
Intermolecular forces ?
Are the forces that apparent between two water molecules.
Can solid Ionic bond conduct electricity?
Because ionic solids are in a fixed positions they cannot conduct electricity.
What happens when Ionic substances are heated and become a liquid or dissolved in a liquid
The separated Ions are free to mov, thus enabling the liquid substance to conduct electricity.
What is a simple molecular structure ?
An atoms that is joined together to form a covalent bond to form molecules
Is it harder to break apart the intramolecular forces or the intermolecular forces ?
Intermolecular forces are weaker than intramolecular due to the fact that something like water can be broken apart easier than the O form the H atoms of the intra force.
Allotrope
The different way elements can bond together, Graphite, charcoal, and diamond are all allotropes of carbon.
All to rope is made of diamonds.
Delocalized electrons are ?
In chemistry, delocalized electrons are electrons in a molecule, ion or solid metal that are not associated with a single atom or a covalent bond. Said elements can carry a charge or conduct electricity.
What type of formation do diamonds have
Tetrahedral
Which substance has stronger intermolecular forces a simple molecular bond or an ionic bond?
Ionic bond
Which substances has weaker forces
Simple molecular substances have weaker intermolecular forces their boiling and melting points are lower.
