Atoms and Elements Flashcards
Understand structure
The nucleus
Has protons and neutrons
Electrons
Negatively charged and occupy different shells or energy states.
What is the charge of an Atom?
Have not charge over all.
Periodic table is divided up ?
Reactive metals, transition metals, other metals, non-metals, noble gases
Atomic number, where is it and what is it?
Number at the bottom a smaller number that signifies the number of protons.
Mass number ?
Total number of protons and neutrons
Why do elements in the same group of the periodic table have similar chemical properties?
They all have the same amount of electrons in their outer shell.
How many electrons in their outer shells does LI have and Fr have?
Lithium to Francium have 1 electron in the outer shell.
So group one how do they react with water ?
They all react with water to form an alkaline solution and hydrogen gas, with oxygen they form oxide.
Number of valence electrons for noble gases?
0
State how many electrons order go in each electron shells or energy states?
1,8,8
What is an Ion?
It is a charged particle
What charge does a non-metal have & a metal have
Metal atoms are positive because they lose electrons, non metals are negative because they gain electrons.
What is ionic bonding
The attraction of a positive and a negatively charged element.
What is covalent bonding?
Each atom shares an electron with another atom.
Do compounds have a fixed ratio?
Yes
What is a molecule?
At least two atoms joined together, these can be the same atoms or different atoms
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance formed when two or more chemical elements are chemically bonded together
What are particles?
They are atoms, ions & molecules
What is suspension?
bigger molecules are suspended temporarily
What is saturation?
No more can be added
examples of solvents?
Are water, ethanol, toluene, chloroform, acetone, milk
Examples of solutes ?
include, sugar, salt, oxygen, etc
