Investigative Skills Flashcards
What is a hypothesis
This is a prediction of what might happen in an experiment based on scientific knowledge
what is rate in a reacrion
Rate =- 1/time
Tea and sugar what happens when stired
Fresh solvent particles being able to touch the solute particles, more rapidly thus increasing the rate of the reaction.
Apparatus ?
Items being the equipment used in an experiment.
Variables ?
Variables are things that can change throughout the experiment and change the outcome.
Independent variable ?
The variable that can change so that you can observe different outcomes. Acid concentration. The Acid has to be put (IN) by you, so you control it. This is shown on the x axis. Goes up on independent steps.
Dependent variable ?
Dependent variable a variable whose changes you want to discover. Time would be dependent on the concentration of the acid on the Y axis.
Categorical variable ?
Categorical variable is best described like a label or category.
A continuous ?
A continuous variable is measured with instruments and numbers like speed or time.
Constants ?
To keep other factors or variables the same.
Uncontrolled variable
Is a variable which we fail to keep constant
An accurate measurement
An accurate measurement one which is closer to the true value.
Precise measurement ?
Precise measurement is one which is quoted to loads of significant figures.
What two big units are the same
liter = dm3/decimetres
What two smaller units are the same
milliliter = cm3
